Lamar Community College had a successful Fall Orientation for new students on July 15th. Lamar Community College makes it their priority to start each semester with events to help make students aware of all that LCC has to offer. The day started with students taking the ACCUPLACER. Once completed, the students headed to LCC Wellness Center to check in. This involves receiving a packet of information, a free backpack, and scheduling an adviser appointment to register for classes. President John Marrin started the event with a warm welcome to all LCC students and their parents. The opening session ended with giving away a $500 scholarship. Parents and students also received information on financial aid and were able to attend Financial Literacy taught by LCC’s Financial Aid Directors Teale Hemphill and Dorothy Choat.

Next, students were divided into parent groups led by student ambassadors. Each group attended concurrent workshops, including Technology Training, Student Life, and Faculty Panel, and Student Resources. The workshops were located throughout the school, giving the students an opportunity to see the LCC campus.

The day wasn’t just spent in workshops. Students enjoyed a pizza lunch sponsor by LCC. Ambassadors led the groups in games which helped students to get to know each other. The faculty and staff volunteered their time to welcome the students and to help them become orientated with the campus.

The Student Orientation was a great success this year as 96 new students joining the LCC family. Academic advisors extended their hours to remain on campus as they planned their Fall Semester schedule. Students are assigned an academic advisor to help construct a feasible degree plan, which not only helps start them on the road to graduation, but can help in transferring to various universities.

Also, the Student Service Center held extended hours to accommodate students who wanted one-on-one assistance in financial aid, registering, or paying bills.

Many new students feel overwhelmed their first semester, and this is a wonderful way to help both students and parents ease into the new semester.

LCC will host its second orientation on August 16th. Students can register at Fall courses begin August 19th.
