Moving forward by leaps and bounds….

Lamar Community College Foundation – August 2013

Anne-Marie Crampton, Director Institutional Advancement

foundation-smThe Lamar Community College Foundation is poised to do great things for our students and college.  We need your assistance to make that possible. Well over 70% of our full-time employees (and many adjunct instructors) contributed to the Foundation last academic year, either through payroll deduction, an annual gift, or sponsorship of our golf tournament.  What message does that send to our communities and prospective donors, when WE FIRST GIVE?  Let’s make it to 100% by the end of the year!  Our Foundation Board is close to that goal, and we hope to issue to the challenge to our Advisory Council, program advisory boards.  Employees at the City of Lamar and counties in our service area will now be given the opportunity to invest in THEIR college through payroll deduction too!

But first…

What is the Foundation?

The Lamar Community College Foundation is a 501(c)3  non-profit created in 1973 to assist the college.  While its efforts have been primarily focused on raising scholarships in the past, it is also the College’s “entrepreneurial” funding arm.  Its goals are:

Build a SOLID FOUNDATION:  This is not only a College goal, it also works as a goal for the Foundation.  While unrestricted donations cover the cost of operational expenses, they also help the Foundation to direct funds where they can be best used.  Every contribution makes a difference here.

The Foundation is creating a Giving Circle to encourage supporters to contribute annually.  These gifts entitle donors to additional benefits and recognition.

Scholarships:  LCC Service Area, Presidential, Community, and program-specific scholarships are all part of the Foundation’s mission to assist students financially and attract the best and brightest to our campus.  Limited matching scholarship funds are now available to double some contributions.  Applications and additional information are available at www.lamarcc.edu/scholarships.

$1,000 Service Area Scholarships are open to ALL service area high school graduates.  These scholarships give families tangible assistance in covering tuition & fees.  With additional merit and need-based financial aid, many students can completely cover their cost of attendance and make college possible.  And with accrued dual credit, many students are able to graduate and transfer after a year.

We will be attempting to fund 15 two-year Presidential Scholarships for the 2014-2015 year through individual and corporate contributions and sponsorships.  These merit scholarships cover tuition & fees and have a community service requirement.  Employee contributions to the Foundation covered an additional presidential scholarship, increasing them to eight in 2013-2014.  The Foundation currently covers the cost of all sophomore-level scholarships.

Community Scholarships and other program-specific awards allow organizations to invest in LCC’s students and families to give in memory of a loved one.  They range from $250 to $2,000 per year.

Program Development:  Alums, businesses, and community members may choose to “invest” in particular programs on campus, i.e., Ag/HTM, Welding, or Nursing.  With an additional 25% Colorado tax credit available through the Enterprise Zone, these individuals and organizations can now invest in our workforce and receive a tax benefit on April 15.

Capital Construction: Our residence halls are a limiting factor in our plan to grow the college.  The Foundation is actively pursuing contributions – large and small – to accomplish the first of three 14-room residence hall “pods.”  A lead gift in the 2013-2014 year will start construction and the road toward growth on campus.  Gifts above $100 are also eligible for Enterprise Zone credit.

Another long-term opportunity to give is to include the Lamar Community College Foundation in your estate plan. This opportunity to leave a legacy can be significant for both you and your family.  For more information, consult your financial advisor or call the LCC Foundation office.

I truly believe that we will see great things happen on our campus in the next year.  Large and small gifts can significantly change our reality.  On campus or in our community, we can make a difference together.  If you have any questions regarding any of the topics above, please contact me at 719.336.1520 or foundation@lamarcc.edu.
